Twelve gold rings

It’s Christmas day, and have I got a ruddy bloody good treat for you! As you read this, I plan to be knee-deep in goose fat roast potatoes, my mouth smeared with gravy and the words “go on then, I’ll have another Bailey’s” forming on my lips. I’ve been planning this issue for almost as long as this newsletter has been alive, so let’s dig in.

Now, this one needs a bit of a setup. Every year, British comedy trio Pappy’s do a Christmas edition of their Flatshare Slamdown live panel show which is, quite honestly, a highlight of the season for me.

At the end of each show they do a quickfire round where panelists have to buzz in with the correct answer to a stupid question (sorry Matthew). In their festive edition, they augment it with a rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas, where each question is a phrase that has a vague assonance with a line from the song.

For example, this year’s “five gold rings” question was “he’s got a very cool name and he was the second man on the moon”, to which the answer is of course “Buuuuuuzz Aaaaaaaaldriiiiiiiiin”… and so on, all the way up to “twelve lords a-leapin’”, which is the minute I’m sharing.

Quick content note: the lads who put the show on are warm and cuddly and their hearts are pure, but after a few eggnogs — eggs-nog? — things can get a bit bawdy and a little less than pure uncut woke. So if that’s not your bag, that’s cool, but try and keep a sense of fun and humour with you and remember that a joke doesn’t always have to have a victim.

With that said, your festive minute for this week starts at the 1:32:27 mark in my copy. It’s very British. Strap in.

On a personal note, I’m hoping to move to Brighton in 2023 and will do everything in my power to make it to a live recording. If you like British humour and know what a radio panel show is, run — don’t walk — to your local podcast outlet and pick up a copy of Pappy’s Flatshare Slamdown. They’ve been doing this for over 10 years and while they’re not unknown to comedy fans here, they deserve a lot more love. And while you’re at it, why not sling them a vote in the National Comedy Awards?

Right, I’ve got a chocolate log cooling in the kitchen so I’m going to go check on that. You have a lovely break and we’ll check in again next Sunday. In the meantime, you keep listening – I will too.

Take care. x
