Nymbol was conceived towards the end of 2011, while Mark was still working on Meegloo. After that project folded, he began work on a prototype, and then brought in his former employer Andy Hartwell as Managing Director of Nymbol Ltd.

Its original form was as a CMS that would be used to build guided tours of museums, making use of QR codes to help patrons navigate the works on show, and get more information about them, without needing to read plaques. The idea came to Mark while he was walking through a museum in Oxford.

In 2013, Nymbol was restructured as a four-way partnership between Mark, Andy, Robbie Beak and Becky Bartlett. From then on, the business focused on working with cultural organisations to produce mobile apps and websites that showcased archived content. Clients included the Library of Birmingham, the Silverstone racing course, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the British Council in Pakistan.
